bio
An in-demand sideman, Viner has performed internationally with ensembles led by John Hollenbeck, Steve Lehman, Tim Berne, Tyshawn Sorey, Anna Webber, Kate Gentile, and Rafiq Bhatia, among others. He has appeared at major venues and festivals including the North Sea Jazz Festival, Big Ears, Moers Festival, Winter Jazz Festival, Jazzfest Berlin, and the London Jazz Festival, among many others.
Viner has been a member of John Hollenbeck’s ensembles since 2009, performing with the John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble — featured on the Grammy-nominated albums All Can Work and Eternal Interlude — and Claudia Quintet. Early in his career, he was involved in a number of formative free improvisation projects, including Tyshawn Sorey’s unrecorded group Soto Vélez, whose exploration of open-form improvisation, experimental textures, and collaborative interplay helped shape his later ensemble work.
He is currently developing new material for his quartet with Camila Nebbia, Liz Kosack, and Lukas Akintaya, expanding his recent focus on hybrid acoustic–electronic textures and collective improvisation.
Jeremy Viner is a Vandoren Artist.
JEREMY VINER (b. 1986, Ellsworth, ME) is a Berlin-based multi-instrumentalist, improviser, composer, and educator whose work spans a wide array of musical idioms. After nearly two decades in New York City, he relocated to Berlin in 2023, maintaining an active presence in both the New York and European experimental music scenes.
Viner is a founding member of the collaborative trio SIFTERS, with Kate Gentile and Marc Ducret — a group exploring complex polyrhythmic frameworks, counterpoint, and the integration of composed and spontaneous form. He is also a long-standing member of the tenor saxophone quartet Battle Trance and the chamber minimalist ensemble Bing & Ruth, both central outlets for his interest in ensemble sound and extended musical form.
